Dr Frances Tefany

Principal Dermatologist

Dr Tefany is a qualified dermatologist and fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatology with 30 years’ experience in clinical practice.

She commenced her medical studies at the University of New South Wales, completing her MBBS in 1986. After working as a junior doctor and a participant of the physicians program at Westmead and affiliated hospitals, she was inspired to undertake post-graduate studies in dermatology.

She completed her part 1 and entry Fellowship in dermatology in 1987. She then undertook post-graduate research in melanoma at the University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital as the first post-grad candidate in the newly established Department of Dermatology.

Dr Tefany completed her thesis on regression in primary malignant melanoma, obtaining her MD in 1990 from the University of Sydney. She subsequently spent some time in New York at the Skin and Cancer Foundation, studying under the supervision of the preeminent melanoma Professors Alfred Kopf and Bernie Ackerman.

Upon returning to Australia, she undertook her part 2 Fellowship in Dermatology training at St Vincent’s and the Skin Hospital (formerly known as the Skin Cancer Foundation), which she completed in 1993.

After working in private practice in Sydney for 12 months, she moved with her husband, Dr Bill Conomos, a popular family GP, to the Southern Highlands where in addition to running a busy, private practice, she has raised her four beautiful children.

Since 1993, Dr Tefany has been the principal dermatologist in Bowral and surrounding areas. She has been on staff at Bowral Private Hospital, Ramsay Group since 1994. Dr Tefany also consults in Sydney at the Skin Hospital in Darlinghurst.

She was a VMO at Liverpool Hospital between 1998-2005, and was on the teaching staff at University of Wollongong (Bowral).

Since 2007, she has been a VMO at St Vincent’s Hospital and a senior lecturer at UNSW Medical School. She is also an active member of the Rural and Regional Dermatology Group, having coordinated the first NSW rural meeting in Bowral in 2012.

She has been actively involved in training future dermatologists, medical students and nurses since 2005. She maintains a strong research interest in Dermatology, particularly in melanoma and other skin cancer management, psoriasis and Biologic therapies, acne, adolescent and paediatric dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, vulval diseases, disorders of hair and nails and autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.

She is a keen photographer and cook, and speaks several languages including Greek, Italian, French and Spanish. She is passionate about providing Dermatology services to regional and remote areas in both Australia and overseas.
